I purchased a new Netgear dgnd3300 router/firewall/dsl modem/ftp server/USB network drive/ for my network. It was a breeze to set up on Verizon DSL (It took about 30 minutes - nearly completely automated). All I had to do was plug in the cables and the install CD essentially did the rest. Another great thing about the install process was that it did not require any driver installation. Everything ran off of the CD without touching my harddrive.
After it was set up, I connected to the new wireless network with my SONY VAIO without any problems. When it came to connecting to the network with my Gateway, I ran into a big problem. The network was PAINFULLY slow on it. I mean, like 1 bit per second or worse :).
I called Netgear tech support for help. I walked through all the usual suspects with them. After about an hour on the phone, the tech said..update your wireless card drivers. Unfortunately I couldn't do that because my Gateway was pretty old and it already had the latest drivers.
Rather than give up completely, and return it as the tech suggested,I thought I'd search the internet a little more to see what I could find. I found an obscure reference that someone suggested to reset the computers Internet Explorers settings back to factory. I thought I'd give it a try, since I don't use IE that much anyway.
To my surprise, it worked!! Not only did it fix the IE speed connecting to the internet, it also fixed firefox as well! Here is the fix:
1) Open Iexplorer Browser
2) goto Iexplorer|tools|advanced and hit reset
3) If necessary, run cmd, get to a command prompt, and type
ipconfig /flushdns
