Plug kindle fire in using a regular USB micro sd cable, it should find its own drivers over windows driver search service.
Download KFFirstAide100.zip from https://xerocomm.box.com/kffa-100To root Kindle fire 2,
run FFirstAide100 runme.bat
Choose the rooting/unrooting option and use the "old" method
If during the installation process, the command line screen just says starting server and stays there for a while without doing anything, turn kindle off and on again. It should continue the install after this (may have to do this a few times).
After rooting, I suggest running runme.bat again and disabling over the air (OTA) amazon updates because you will lose root.
If you somehow brick your kindle,
Get a fastboot cable(or get one from amazon):

run FFirstAide100 and reinstall the operating system using the kindle fire 2 option.
If the kindle fire comes up as otter2-prod-04
force windows to use the correct drivers..e.g. in device manager click on otter2-prod-04 and click
on install from disk, go to where you downloaded the kindle fire driver, click let me pick and in there someplace will be the correct kindle fire driver
